painting my car with a roller yes!!!

im kinda new on here and i dont post much, but this is the only real mustang site that i can get some good or true feed back on.
i just got done reading up on this roller paint job ####, and well after reading and researching this actually come out to be a good job when you take your time. my budget for this little project is gonna be $120. and i will post up progress picks. and shjt like that. if you dont care then do read but im sure that some will be more intrested than others. i know it kinda sounds ricer but i have done every thing to my car my self besides the machine work and installing the the pistons in it, so for the weekend worrior this is for you. this car is my dd so im hoping no longer than 7-8 days max. thank god i dont have to drive to work. im kinda excited about this so so feed back from others of what and what not to do would be some help. body wise ive only put a wing hood and finder on the car. after that nothing else so i dont have any body experince. so guy wish me luck or troll or whatever. but if one person likes this than its a success. of btw i know for 80 more bones i can macco my ####, but as i said i want to do it myself. but here is what im working with

7 to 8 days max?
You might want to read up more on that roll on paint. The process is rolling paint, then blocking flat, then again rolling, then blocking flat and again and again again...........

If you're only wanting to do it, to be doing something different, then I think it's a neat project. If you're doing it thinking it's some how easier or more practical than using a spray gun, do some more research.

Basically you'll be doing some of the hardest work in automotive painting over and over again. From some of the stuff I've read on it, it could be up 13 or 14 times > doing the work of painting your car 13 or 14 time. Ouch!!!

Don't sign me up for it, but I'll for sure follow your posts on it.

thank you ^ i know this is gonna take a lot of coats and wet block sanding and im very well prepared for this. im in the pross. of masking right now and taking the side molding off. i didnt know the ford emblem in the back was riveted in. also to make steps faster ive heard of using a space heater on or dryer to move along quicker. is this a waste of time or not

What kind of paint are you going to use? Rustolem enamel can be wetsanded and buffed to a brilliant glossy finish but hasn't the UV protection required for a car. Have you checked out ebay, and Eastwood, for budget auto paint? You could squeak it into your budget I would think, get better results with less work too. Do you have a paint gun set?

When I was a kid (first or second grade) I saw a dude rolling paint onto an old Chevy (like from the 50s). I thought there's no way he could get a decent finish that way but when I saw the car later it looked absolutely stunning. Years later (after learning a little bit about auto body and paint ) I realised that he was rolling lacquer and must have wetsanded and buffed out many coats to get it to look that way. That's old school, but it works for a show car/ garage queen. Forget about lacquer for a DD; even the new acrylic lacquers (like DuPont's Duracryl) aren't very durable compared to enamel or urethane.

I would have the temp in your garage, to whatever's recommended by the paint manufacture.

Do you have a link, to where you're getting the paint?

I was checking this out a while back. They're talking about the roll-on stuff.

http://www.honda-tech.com/zeroforum/84

i have a 150psi air compressor and i dont have a tool truck that comes to work i guess i can go to harbor freight or sears to buy a gun and stuff cause i know what to get im just scared of over spary on everything in my garage.....

im really kinda glad i posted about this but at the same time it sounds like a lot of work that will not get me the finish product i was hoping for. i just wanted a clean smooth paint job....

It's the CFM that's important, psi doesn't matter.

I didn't mean to discourage you, but the roller stuff is WAY more work. By the time you were done with a roll on paint job, I would guess that you would have at least 5 or 6 times the labor invested, compared to what it would take spraying it.

Plastic sheeting's inexpensive. You could cover every bit of your garage. But I've painted body parts outside with good results. A whole car though..?. it would catch a lot of dust, but it can be done.

You can get good results with whatever paint method you use. It's all about how particular you are and how badly you want it to be perfect.

but his time is pretty much free to him, where as paying a body man requires a lot of his time and money...

For him to even ask about it, he's likely a DIYer. I don't think he should pay a shop. I just think he'd be better off using a spray gun.

just use a spray gun, it will turn out 100 times better, and will require less time. will cost more tho.

you get, what you pay for.

I'd rather wet sand and buff a car painted outside in a windstorm once, than a car painted with a roller 5-10 times. Just my .02

Some budget paint your car kits, including thinner, activator and other painting supplies.

I'm actually in the process of doing the 'roller method ' on my 86. I've got the first coat on the car. Temp in the garage does not seem to matter. It's about 38-40 in my shop. The paint looked awful going on the car, but after it dries it lays down smooth. I have 80$ in matierals.

I'll shoot some of the car now. I have 5 coats on it and have wetsanded it once between coats 3-4. I have about 20 hours in the job so far. That includes disassembly and taping & doing the window trim. I'll have post them tonight.

keep in mind Hot rod painted a car basic white. I am sure this method would not work well for any metallic color.

What about the bumpers and rubber trim pieces? Do you use a flex primer?

well the method is meant for rustoleum paint, and i don't believe they have any metallic colors for automotive paint, although i could be wrong

Before & After pics in my gallery. I used rustoleum 'sunburst yellow' & SEM charcoal trim paint for the grey.
