best sounding straight thru mufflers?

looking for some nice 3" mufflers for my 408. I want something deep and loud!

I dont want any high pitched sounding mufflers. I def want it to sound like a mean car that just rumbles from idle to redline. I dont want a quiet idle at all.

So that all said... whats the best?

So far from what i can think of, maybe Magnaflow? but ive never heard those in person on a pushrod... only a modular a while ago.

Whats my choices? what sounds the best?

Magnaflow doesn't sound bad, just not a favorite of mine. You can hear it on their website though.

I took mine off and replaced them with Flows, but your looking for a straight thru.

I like the Dynomax Ultraflo for a straight thru.

I am running the magnaflows on a 393. Overall I like the sound, a lot more deeper tone. You can hear them here

dynomax bullets are by far the best sounding. I had some dynomax ultraflows and they sound like crap but flow well

what do the bullets sound like compared to the ultra flows?

im very picky about how my car is gonna sound with this 408, so i think what im gonna do is leave my mufflers slip in instead of welded in, and just keep changing them out till i find what i like.

The bullets have deeper sound compared to the ultra's...the ultra's are raspy sounding, kinda hard to explain but it definately not what your looking for

I've got the Pypes Violator cat-back. If loud is what you're after, you won't find louder than that. They are a straight-through muffler, no packing.

What does a muffler have to do with emissions?

My magnaflows sound like ass. Way too quiet, even compared to my previous 3 chamber flowmaster setup, and I'm currently dumped. I've got stock displacement though...maybe a bigger motor could make more sound with the magnaflows.

It gets a little blatty from what I can hear. However, that is not a fox/sn95 nor is it a Windsor engine. The rear mounted mufflers and 4.6L 3-valve definitely have a different sound.

"Blatty" is a good way to describe the magnaflow sound....I wish I had thought of it when I posted earlier! To help the OP, do the other straight through brands sound better or different? Anyone try BOTH a Magnaflow and Ultraflow?

I'm keeping the magnaflow catback because
1) it's got decent build quality and should last longer than the car
2) I haven't put that many miles on it, and I'm hopeful that it will get louder as some fiber material burns off
3) The straight-through design most likely costs less HP than a chambered design, and
4) I'm putting on decent heads, which I've heard makes the exhaust sound meaner. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I will say that my Dynomax mufflers have started to show signs on cracking where the pipes meet the muffler body. Nothing too serious yet. They muffler also sound hollow now when tapping on the case. They have probably blown all of the packing out of the muffler. They do seem to be louder now than when I installed them ~5 years ago.

I have a set of Borlas that I may install, but I have had them for a few years. I'll probably hold on to them until the Dynomax mufflers fall apart. I did have some 2.25" Borlas before the Dynomax mufflers. They were deep and smooth, but pretty quiet.

Here's a few videos with the Borlas

I have a Borla catback I might put on my GT that was on a LX I had..like new..but it is the original 2" catback with square tips. It was slightly louder than stock on my '88 LX but my GT has off road H-pipe and headers. Right now my GT has the stock catback on it.

Were those the regular Borlas? Larger ovals ones? I just don't want the annoying interior drone...but some good sound.

They were just the standard oval mufflers. They were actually on sale through Ford Motorsport many years back for like $45 each for 2.25" so I bought a set. I'd say they are identical to the ProXS line. They had some done, but not anywhere as bad as my Dynomax mufflers.

Another vote for bullets (cheap, straight through, and light). And yes I have to agree, all magnaflow exhaust sounds like a$$.

i don't think that it sounds like ass but it doesn't sound good either.

i put a set of bullets on my car, drove it around the block and immediately put my flowmasters back on. i've got some spintechs on there now and i think that i like those.
