Saturday I finally had time to take another run at installing everything. I disassembled the stock intake north of the tb. It took about ten minutes. I also disconnected the battery.
I took the air sensor out. Expending two dabs of alcohol and two q-tips, I cleaned the black soot off the upwind side of the air sensor. (Being a rookie, I didn't want to remove the black stuff, then log on to the corral and have people say "you did WHAT? That black stuff NEEDS to be there!" A note to do so in C&L's instructions would have been great.)
I put everything back together, 20 minutes. The only difference from my previous attempt is that this time I put the air sensor on TOP of the Mass Air unit.
Reconnected the battery.
Checked everything.
Started up the biotch. It purred like a kitten. When revved, it roared like a lion. I drove it gently around the block to make sure it wouldn't die when it warmed up.
Growing in confidence, I went out to an empty strip of road with a 50mph speed limit, waited for a light to turn green, and hammered it. My SOTPM tells me I now have 275 rwhp, up from 175rwhp. (Hold the bs flag for now, more at the end.)
This morning I just touched the starter switch and the car fired to life- as opposed to the normal one second of cranking.
And usually the car starts starving for air around 4k. Now it pulls HARD up to redline. (You supercharged guys would probably laugh at what I call hard acceleration, but relative to what it was is day vs night.)
So did a C&L intake kit alone increase my rwhp by 100? We all know that's not possible. I think the big culprit here was the caked-on soot on my air sensor. Removing the crud, my computer now knows how much air is being ingested, and I presume that's a good thing.
And let me just relate the incredible satisfaction of installing a $300 kit which, along with cleaning the sensor, transformed the car from wheezing above 4k to healthy-to-redline.
At this point I am a satisfied C&L user. If I get the time I will give them a call and offer to write up a REAL installation instruction sheet.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to my previous thread.

Glad it works! The MAF upgrade was my favorite mod and it yielded awesome results for such little time. 15+hp and ft-lbs is a welcomed improvement to any car. You probably gained more, but like you said some of it came from cleaning the MAF wires.
Yes, I put the extra sleeve on. It fit tightly over the tb, and the sleeve on the inlet pipe fit tightly on top of that. Then the whole mess got tightened down with a clamp. I doubt it ever was an issue.

For two years, I had problems with my car. Even after a dyno-tune, my car died at idle, died in sharp left hand turns, etc. Everyone, including the dyno-tuner said it was the 73mm C&L. Those meters just don't work well with our cars is all I heard. Just when I was about to get rid of it, someone recommended that I clean the air sensor. That little bottle of electrical cleaner solved all my problems.
I know our set-ups are different but my 76mm works flawless. No idle or drivability problems. I now make sure to keep the air sensor clean and have yet to have anymore problems. Glad to hear it worked out for you.

Did you have it dynoed at Abacus before March of this year? When I did my 3 MAF dyno thrash, Chuck mentioned a C&L guy that couldn't get anything to work tuning wise. Just curious if that was you.
BTW, I'm in Coronado now. Sorry I never got a chance to get together with you. How's the car running?

I'm just jealous that you're in San Diego. I miss that place.
Nope, wasn't me. It's possible that my car could probably be a bit more fine tuned with a Pro-m 77, but my car runs great as is. I'm thinking why fix it if it anin't broke.

Probably the best advice anyone could give. Then again, it all depends on what the definition of "is" is errrr I mean "broke's" definition. I just bought a $115 FRPP 65mm throttle body that isn't polished like the current one I own. This one matches my dull upper. I'm keeping the polished 65 incase I ever polish the rest of the engine. You've seen my car, it is by no means a show car though so making it bling bling isn't likely
Anyway, sorry to hijack your post P63. If you hear of any Mustang get togethers, let me know! Also, where do we have to go to race? I've heard a lot about cracking down on street racing (not that I do that) and the usual answer is that the city needs to build a racetrack. How far away is the nearest one?
The drag strip is in Carlsebad. A couple Sandy Eggans go there, I think Laura and Ron do. Maybe Jason will be there.
I believe there is 1/8 mile drag racing and perhaps autocrossing that happen occassionally at Qualcomm Stadium.
Sorry I don't have contact info for Total Performance. 411 should give you their number, they are in Santee. They have a lot of nice hardware out there. Both times I was there they had two or three 351 Vobras in back. Greg is the owner and he does consciencious work. Bob at the front desk is Greg's step dad.

I have a set of 3.55 gears that I need installed. Does anyone have a suggestion of where to take it or where NOT to take it out in SD?
95GTS (Chris) suggested Swanson Performance. I'm going to go with that unless you guys know of some place better.
Matt, go to Danny, you won't be disappointed. He does excellent work though it is about a two hour drive.
By the way, what is the MH-60, as apposed to the other variants? You're not going to do plane gaurd are you? That has to be the worst assignment, IMO ?

No plane guard for me, not anytime soon. The newest 60 is replacing the 46 for vertrep. It has an all glass cockpit with 4 computer screens. WAAAAYY more modern than the steam gauges on the H-3. What's that phrase? Like Darth Vader's bathroom???
