I believe an effective cross-over pipe (H-pipe or X-pipe if you will) is the key to the sound you're trying to describe. How LOUD it is (volume) is pretty much a function of the type of mufflers used and whether or not cats are present. As pointed out, other components impact it as well. But if you've ever heard an old school V8 with no crossover - you'll hear the difference. And the X-pipe set ups I've heard are even more effective at creating that sound quality than an H-pipe is.

I've had several different types/brands...cats/no cats.
I haven't found the H pipes give that sound that I think you're looking for. The BBK X-Pipe with shorty headers and flowmaster 40's is what I have now. Here's a video of mine with the 347. http://www.lincolnsvo.com/ It's not a radical burnout video so you can hear if this is what you like. If you like it even more pronounced you'll have to go with long tubes.

Clean "tinny" is a "no cat" H pipe and 2 chamber flowmasters. When you have cats the same flows give you a deeper more "thunder" sound. That's why they coined the term "american thunder" for their 2 chamber cat back exhaust kit.
Once you go with good heads, cam, intake and all the trimmings, you'll have more of a real NASCAR sound. I used to be able to tell just by ear if a 5.0 had no cats or not. I don't see too many modified foxs on the road anymore though. |

BTW - I have the ultimate "X-pipe" on mine -- no room for 2 mufflers in the traditional location (in front of rear axle) -- so I opted for a replica Boss 429 single transverse muffler behind the rear axle. And I get compliments all the time on how the car sounds. It's not nearly as loud as some (thank god - I'm old and tired of the noise) but the sound quality is as good as it gets.

I'll have to agree on the H-pipe for the sound you're looking for. I've had two x-pipes and I still think the old H-pipe setup with flows sounds better. All un-catted of coarse!

Consider Mac mufflers too. I have their catback on my GT with an off road X and the exhaust sounds pretty clean with a nice growl when you get on the throttle hard. It's not nearly as deep as my old setup with the same catback and an off road H, with the X pipe it's more clean sounding.

an x pipe makes a higher pitched tone than an h pipe..the h give it more of a down low,old school muscle car type rumble..the x doesnt give as deep of a sound

High compression, long duration, lots of overlap, long tubes, H-pipe, and chambered mufflers. Tailpipes will make the sound a little less deep, but I'm sure you knew that already. Something like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZaymUPWxUA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb_0G6QZKqQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iD4jLH0gJsY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYqQjWWifLA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJoRc...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cDzgGQxsvk with and without exhaust (without shows mods). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcWQP...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrYTs...eature=channel

even tho you have to run cats, doesn't mean you have to all the time
on both of my stangs I have a catted h-pipe and an o/r h (for the fox) and o/r x (for the cobra) and i just swap on the cats when I need to smog it. 1) get more power and 2) keeps the cats clean so i will never have to replace them in the future. yea it takes an hour or so to replace them, but i don't mind, i like the wrench time
