Best Sounding Cat-back with long tubes and off-road X-pipe???
I have FRPP shorties and a Bassani cat-back. I tried a Bassani off-road X-pipe and it sounded like total crap with that cat-back. If I went to long tubes and a off-road x-pipe intermediate pipe, what cat-back would sound good with it if I would swap out my Bassani cat back? Please don't say magnaflow-I just can't get past those 3 1/2" tailpipe tips. My son's 85 has shorties, off-road X-pipe and a Dynomax Ultra Flow stainless cat-back and it sounds great. Pretty quiet cruising, but awesome at WOT. But i didn't know how long tubes would change the sound. Let me know what you think.
Ive heard a supercharged 94 Cobra with BBK long tubes, BBK X pipe and UltraFlo catback....sounds pretty unique at idle and part throttle, but sounds wicked at WOT!

I really like the sound of my bassani cat-back with the off-road H-pipe, but I admit it is more of a generic musclecar sound where as my sons off-road X-pipe and Dynomax Ultra-Flow has that unique 5.0 sound. You can hear him coming or going and you know it's got to be a 5.0 mustang. The strange part to me is that he has that X-pipe on there, but it doesn't have any high pitched raspiness that is so common with X-pipe cars. The straight thru ultra flows must just work good with that X-pipe.
Exhaust sounds are so subjective that you will get a different answer from everyone as you well know. And the truth is a lot of them sound good. There is no one "right" answer and we all like to think what we have is the greatest.
That being said, my .02 are this. My goal is to see how much power I can build while staying emissions legal. At my power level emission controls aren't costing any hp anyway. Therefore I have FRPP shorties, a BBK X-pipe WITH catalytic converters and a 2 1/2 Flowmaster cat back. I know supposedly the chambered mufflers don't work with an x-pipe. Flowmasters are heavy...blahh, blahh blahh. This sounds to me just like the legendary 5.0 sound but has no raspiness that you speak of whatsoever. Quite mellow but very daily-driveable. I have a Bassani X-pipe on my 4.6 Cobra and it does have the raspy sound. This is perfect when idleing, cruising, highway speed etc. There is NO drone that it had with an H-pipe and Flowmasters. When my wife drives it and I don't even know whe she is supposed to be coming home, I can hear the car coming down the road (and she is not trying...she thinks I am dumb) and I know it's my car and that it is definitely a 5.0.
I convince myself that I need long tubes and then I see Killer Canary going 12.00's in a mild N/A 3700lb vert with FRPP shorties and then I feel stupid for wanting to spend more money for long tubes when I have brand new FRPP shorties. I like the looks of the Bassani 3" polish tails I have now also. I'm like a fart in a breeze.
I just noticed we are going to have a somewhat similar setup. I have a set of Kenny Troutman worked AFR 165s that are going on as soon as my garage gets finished. I only have to finish the ceiling and then stuff can go in. Back to my question. Did you do the GT40 and AFRs at the same time? I installed the intake several years ago and it made a huge difference by itself. It would actually pull to redline after that. It was out of breath at 4,200 before. friggin, frackin, low T-bird intake. What a piece.

Just curious
Thanks
Mine is a cobra so it had a good intake to begin with. The AFR 165's, XE270hr-14 Cam and GT40 intake are going on as we speak at the same time. The engine is on the engine stand right now gettin all the go fast goodies installed! The main reason for me going to the Gt40 intake is simply, I love the looks of them and the performance should be good too!
Dynomax Ultraflows sound SICK on a car with a O/R pipe. Nice mellow rumble at idle, not too loud when you go easy on it or when you're just cruising but once you step on the gas OMFG!!! You get my drift?
I might be able to get a sound clip tomorrow if I don't get held up by a random issue YET AGAIN lol. Barring any catastrophic leaks or ignition problems I should be good tomorrow.

If you get a sound clip, I'd love to hear it. My son runs the Ultraflows with shorties and a off-road X and at idle it is pretty mellow, but like you said, at WOT I can hear him coming a mile a way, and that's with a pretty stock motor. You could send the clip to agardner@bright.net Thanks!
Starrman, That sounds really sweet! I didn't realize that the 2031 had that much lope to it. NICE!
yeah, I'm surprised how much it lopes also. The first mp3 was actually recorded after the second one and after the motor was warmed up. The idle is at about 750rpm. The other one is when the motor was cold and has the higher idle till warm up....about 900rpm. With the higher idle it doesn't seem to lope as much

If I ever do get that thing started I'll get a clip lol. Today the stock starter proved that it is a turd and the Summit brand mini starter came to the rescue. I was almost positive that the Summit starter was just a stock starter since it looks EXACTLY the same but where my old stocker would not even crank the motor this one did it pretty well. The motor cranks but won't start and the brand new battery from NAPA dies after about 30 seconds of total cranking(not at once, don't want to spend another $120 for a starter so I let it cool off after about 5-8 seconds of cranking this tight ass motor).
I'm guessing that while #1 was at the top of the bore it might not have been on the compression stroke. I'll just put my thumb in the #1 sparkplug hole and see next time I'm there, I ran out of daylight. If I'm off then I'll just bump it around to the compression stroke and re-stab the dizzy. Hopefully the gremlins are sorted out on tuesday and I can go for a cruise.
Ugh, sorry for the semi hijack. I WILL get some sound clips of longtubes with dynomaxes as soon as this bastard gets started. Although the current pipe I have on there is a MAC catted H so I can get through emissions(hopefully) in NJ. It should still sound pretty good though. I'll get a prochamber next month and that should sound WICKED with longtubes and ultras.
