WTF?

Hey corral,

my buddy has an 01 Cobra and he just had the motor rebuilt and after getting it dyno tuned the shop told him the best they could get was 310rwhp/310rwtq. I don't think this is even close to what he should be making with the mods he has especially with it being stroked to a 5.0. Here is a list of his mods.
302 Eagle Stroker Kit, 10.2:1 compression ratio
1 3/4" American Racing Longtube Headers with o/r x-pipe
Comp Stage 2 Cams (#106400)
JLT Cold Air Intake
BBK Twin 65mm Throttle Body
Stock Heads and Intake

Does anyone have mods close to this and could you provide me with your numbers? I don't think the shop he brought it to has a clue about tuning. What do you all think?

Mike

Yeah if you look at the N/A 4 valve high horsepower list, there isn't a single 5.0 4 valve under 350 to the tires, but most of them have an intake and head work. but still with that compression he should have higher numbers than that.

For the other members looking at this... The guy with the cobra was making 301HP and 317 tq with just BOLT ONS, so boring .020 over, stroked to a 5.0, adding comp cams, american racing headers, and going with an off road x pipe (had cats before) he gained 9HP and lost 7 tq to the wheels. OP forgot to mention that the guy with the cobra added 39 lb injectors with the setup because he was running out of fuel on the big end.

Anybody have ideas?

also forgot to mention that the tuner said the a/f ratio was perfect at low 13's, don't know the degrees of timing. We should have a dyno sheet for his car sometime this weekend.

something is definitely off but also keep in mind he won't make great hp through a stock runner length intake.

do a compression check.

it may pick up some power as it breaks in too. but i would do a compression check to make sure things are on the up and up.

It's about 20RW down, he's running stock heads and intake!
That could be made up with a Custom Tune that's dialed in Correctly!

that doesn't mean that there aren't any that make less power.

Both the hp and tq seem to be low. What type of dyno was it on? Can you post a dyno sheet?

Compare the compression from bank to bank, that will tell you if the cam timing is the same on each bank.

how does it feel when driving it to before the rebuild? The dragstrip is always the best dyno imo

HP

Okay, so we started tuning it some more, and it needs more air, the mass air is too small and it's not doing much beyond 5500 RPMs.. so right now it's sitting around 325RWHP.. but with a new mass air and some more tuning, we should be in the 330-350 range.. then I'm just gonna get a blower, throw 8lbs and call it a day...

i put fr500 cams, stock runner length 01 cobra intake, and cleaned up 03 cobra heads on my stock 98 block and made 352rwhp with a faulty ground strap. this is also through an 80mm maf. as a matter of fact, i'm running an fr500 intake now and still using an 80mm.

your MAF should not be pegging at 325hp, not even close. Your combo should be making 370 to the wheels minimum. There is something wrong other than it not getting enough air; cam timing, igtnition, valvetrain...something isn't right and forcing air into it won't fix the problem.

That's less rwhp/rwtq than I'm making on the stock long block (335 rwhp/342 rwtq) with bolt-ons, a ported intake and dyno-tune.

Something is definitely wrong, whether it be low compression on one or more pistons, cam timing or something else.

The owner of the car car, moran 11, who posted above had it dynoed on a dyno jet. That is what the shop he took it to has. Do they typically read out lower numbers?
