I was talking to one of my team leaders at work today & said he was going home to tune up his new (6 races) drag car engine. He asked me if I've ever indexed my plugs. He said he just got off the phone with the guy that built his engine & the guy told him to index the plugs, it would make a difference in how the engine ran & power(15-30hp)!! Told him you would see it on an engine dyno but probably not on a chassis dyno, but said it would definately affect performance of the motor. He said it had shims on the plugs when he took them out to change them. Now, his engine is a chevy 383, Rossler power glide, solid roller cam, 14:1 comp, CNC ported Dart Pro-1's....high dollar engine & tranny. Car goes 6.0 's 1/8th(with throttle stop) in a 91 LX. My question is.... have any of you ever tried this?? Is there really power to be gained by indexing?? Is it worth the time & effort?? What would the effects be on a S/C car??

I wouldnt think it would matter in the 4v motor.. I always did it in my 5.0's and it did show gains, not much but some. Indexing the plug on a modified 5hp briggs shows significant gains.

I would think the valve covers would need to be removed to do it on a 4V?
Not true. You will need to mark the extension though.

I don't understand how indexing would work on my 03 Cobra heads. The spark plug is in the center of the combustion chamber so it really shouldn't matter which way the electrode points.

yeah where would you even index the plug on the 4v motor?

I wouldn't think there is much to gain on the 4v but it should pick up something on the 5.0. 30 hp is quite a stretch though IMO.
