welding undercarriage with carpet in?
I have some subframe connectors that are close enough to the floor pan where I could weld them on there for most of the length and in the larger gaps I'm wanting to make some plates to fill the negative space and weld them all to the floor pan. I am hoping against hope that I could get away with doing the welding with the interior in? I am assuming the metal isn't thick enough were I wouldn't just fry the carpet but I figured I would ask

I don't think there's any benefit to welding the SFC's to the floorpan. Just weld along the full contact length of the subframe's on both sides.

yeah, I did assume it would roast the carpet, just hoping that i was wrong
As far as it helping I would like to tie all the structures together as much as possible. I can't see it hurting rigidity and filling in the gaps would definitely increase the stiffness in bending as there is more then a linear increase of strength in bending with increased 'height' i.e. a 1x2 vs a 2x2 will have about 4x the strength in bending. plus its fun playing with my welder lol. |

The floor pan is so thin that even with the lowest settings on the welder it burned holes in the floor pan. I finally managed to strengthen the seat mounting area by welding it to the floorpan from the inside of the car with the carpet removed.
