Longtubes are a major, major pain. I cut a combination wrench in two to make it short enough to fit in a couple of places. Its easy to cross thread those aluminum holes, too. A universal (some folks call them wobble head sockets) comes in handy as well.
Most guys won't attempt a header install on these cars without dropping the 'K' member.

I feel your pain. I have wanted to do longtubes on mine for a while but looking at it I cant bring myself to take on the terror. I put a set of BBK equal length headers on my 94gt and that was bad enough. I can only imagine your frustration.

i def woulda dropped the K
ive done LT's twice on 2V's and its not bad at all really once the K is gone. Obviously yall are wider, but life would be much easier for you with the K out of the way.

Dropping the K-member is the only way for either shorties or LT's. IMHO with all that is involved, and the minimal gains (with shorties) I would only do this for a set of LT's. A competent mechanic can have the K-member dropped in about an hour. That will save you more than an hour of frustration later on when the headers fit right up, and you can access all the bolts. Just my $.02

With the trouble, I would have dropped the K-member and installed long tubes. I don't really buy into the whole "my car is lowered" b.s. as mine has been lowered for more than 10 years and I really haven't had any problems scraping the headers in more than six states and 50k miles as long as you don't approach steep inclines perpendicular.
