When I was in grade school in Connecticut the local pd would come once a year to teach at least the "what to do if you find a gun" and things like that.

I am all for it.

Parents are up in arms (snicker) over telling kids if they see a gun they should: Stop, don't touch, leave the area, tell an adult!

If you have guns in your home and young children, I highly recommend the NRA's Eddie Eagle video available online: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSpIAXIrLG4

For crying out loud they're teaching 4th graders about HIV, why on earth wouldn't you want to teach your kid about staying away from guns? Our son saw this video long before we started exposing him to guns/taking him to the range and we continue to tell him that Eddie Eagle's rules still apply. A gun isn't a toy, it's a tool and like many tools can be dangerous or deadly.

I agree completely. They teach about what happens if you play with matches and start a fire, why not if you play with a gun? Is one dead any less dead than another dead?

IIRC it's been a while since you've had kids in school (or obviously been in school) and they've replaced judgment with policies.

You are very well right.

Sad as guns are just tools. They are part of the second amendment and part of our country.

I would have thought that VA had a gun education program in school. Glad to see they are doing it now.

E. Eagle has been around for a while and is a good program for kids thru the NRA.

I realize it is not exactly the same thing but to be able to hunt in Iowa you have to take a hunter safety course. I took it in the 7th grade and shooting safety was a substantial part of the course.

It's sad that valuable schooltime is being used to teach kids something they should be taught at home, but at least this way it's getting done. Kudos.

And they should also handle human growth and development, yet it's taught in the schools.

Science, anatomy, etc is fine in school. Morals are taught in the home. I know that you know this.

Eh, they are 1st-5th graders. So they lose a few hours one day of coloring and making paper-mache volcanoes. Not everyone has guns at home nor does everyone at home have the proper background or education to teach these kids about firearms safety and what to do.

Because, silly, guns will kill you just by looking at them. They're just that dangerous.

Wait are you saying parents should parent their kids instead of the schools doing everything?

Commie..

I moved to TN 18 months ago from VA. I was tickled pink when my then first grader came home saying she and her friends learned a new song at school that went "stop, don't touch, leave the area, tell an adult!", like it was a new cheer Good on 'em!

I went to school with a kid that got shot through the hip by his good friend, screwing around with a gun at home. We must have been 11 or 12. Luckily, it didn't clip his femoral artery and kill him. I think he was in the hospital and recovery at home for like 3 months though.

If the parents won't do it at home, someone should.

I'm all for teaching life skills in school since it obviously isn't being done at home. HOWEVER!! Schools shouldn't have to.

All kids should know the following by 15 without the help of public school.

1) How to balance a check book and make a budget
2) How to drive a car
3) Gun safety
4) Sex makes babies
5) If you didn't earn it, it's not yours.

I think if we just nail these 5, that would solve most of our problems. I know there's more, but I have to stop before I get too pissed thinking about how stupid most people are.
