I'm in Fairfax n I go to BK all the time. Didn't go much last year bec I was working on the car n didn't have anything to take. We should definitely get a group together. Friday nights they have a cruse in at the lowes parking lot in Woodbridge. It's close to Potomac mills mall. It's real small but a bunch of nice guys there. There is also a big cruse in at the chick-fil-a in sterling. Not sure what days it is though.

Yes excessive is still open as far as I know. I don't hang out there but I have had my car dyno tuned by them before I for my Holley HP efi computer. They do good work and can set up a wicked street car.

havent seen this much activity in this section in a long time! nice to see!
my car is currently under the knife, took the trans out last week, waiting for new parts. I'm super busy with work but hope to have it back together by end of march/beginning of april since I will only have a couple hours a week to work on it. lets definitely set up a meet n' greet / cruise at some point when the weather gets nice

I'd be down for a cruise if there's one going on. I've never actually heard of any cruises around here.

honestly....alot of ####.....i had someone put the car together n its just leaking like crazy. tons of oil out the backside of the motor toward the top....pcv maybe? i really dont know.....doesn't run/pull that well. leaking from tons of diff places and i really don't know these cars well.....
im coming from the import 4cylinder world where i new em well. -just realized the car doesn't even have a dipstick tube or dipstick on it. Last edited by kurazy kracka; 02-14-2012 at 12:55 AM. |

Oh boy. The dipstick goes in the block by the oil pan on the driver's side, kind of hard to see with the engine installed. It's almost certainly going to leak oil there if there's no dipstick installed.
Double check that the firing order is correct. The #1 cylinder is the closest to the front on the passenger side, then it counts straight back to #4 closest to the firewall still on the passenger side. #5 is the front cylinder driver side. 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 is the firing order for an HO 302. What year is your car btw? The PCV is worth checking, if that's plugged you'll get excessive crankcase pressure which will cause leaking problems. Assuming the PCV is good... Find all the places the oil is leaking and wipe it away, then the next time you run the car look at those places to get an idea of how bad the oil leak is. Then wipe them down again, and the next time you run the car take the oil fill cap off first. If the oil leaking is significantly less with the oil cap off you've got excessive crank case pressure (blowby) pushing oil past gaskets and seals, so it's time to do a leak down test, or at least a compression test. Otherwise you just have some bad gaskets/seals that need to be replaced.

yea I'm gonna go pick up a dipstick n tube tomorrow. is where the tube goes in between 7 n 8 i read? can i see it from under the car?
firing order is good, its running on all 8. The car is a 1990. i mean it makes some power, it busts the MTs loose from a roll in first. the back side of the intake manifold on the pass side is spraying oil pretty nice.....no oil cap, just a moroso breather on there. I'm fairly certain the motor is in good shape, shortblock came from a friends car and was running fine when pulled. heads are fresh from machine shop. I know 1 of the leaks for sure is the rear main.....I wish i could even just pay someone who knew these cars like a champ to go thru it....i have a feeling it wouldn't take them more than a few hrs. It just really sucks because this is a car i have always wanted to have n build n as of now I am just ready to ditch the thing. It's completely drained my pocket (which i wouldn't mind if it ran great) and yet runs like ####/leaks everywhere. Last edited by kurazy kracka; 02-14-2012 at 01:00 AM. |

I don't mind looking at it, but don't try to push money on me because then I'm married to the thing.
![]() How well equipped are you? If you have a nice heated garage and decent tools that would expedite things. If you want someone to crawl around your car in the weather, you may need to stick it out until spring. Have you pulled codes yet?

unfortunately I just have a long flat driveway, a lift would be nice. again all I'd really like even is for someone to look at it n help me figure out exactly what i need to do. that guidance alone will give me some motivation to work on it. I haven't pulled the codes yet, wasn't even concerned with those seeing as how bad its leaking.

Sounds like you've got 2 basic issues. It isn't running well, and it's leaking oil.
Not running right can sometimes be tricky and the sort of thing that someone with experience can probably help save a lot of time and trouble with. The best place to start there is pulling codes. It only takes a minute and there's really no reason not to. When it comes to the oil leak, there's really nothing any expert is going to do that you can't do, but first you need to get that dipstick tube in b/c I'm positive you'll get oil all over the place with that missing. After the dipstick is in get some rags and wipe off all the oil on any seams between parts where oil can leak that you can actually see without taking stuff apart. This includes: Oil pan to block Oil pan drain plugs Oil filter to block Oil dip stick tube to block Timing cover to block and water pump to timing cover Distributor to block Lower intake manifold to block, front and rear. PCV valve to lower intake manifold Valve covers to heads Also, clean up the power steering pump, the steering rack, and the power steering cooler (which is really just a metal line that runs up front and loops back.. there's no fins on it). If the car is an automatic, hit the trans fluid lines from the transmission to where they go in to the radiator too. Once all of that is clean, drive the car about 3 miles, then look all those places over to figure out where the oil is coming from. As you drive the air flow grabs the leaky fluid and throws it back. So typically stuff will stay clean in front of wherever the leak is, and the stuff behind the leak gets covered. If it looks like everything is covered all over again, take a good look at those power steering components and transmission lines as it might be one of those systems leaking, not the engine.

awesome, thanks a ton!
I figured out prolly a main reason it's running real rough.....with the gt40 intake on it the AIT wasn't tapped and installed so it's getting no signal for that. prolly 1 reason for the CEL too. I'll be tapping the intake tube n moving it there when i have the upper n lower off. ( i know lower is leaking for sure.) went ahead and got a new water pump for the car as well. No clue how old this 1 was so i figured while its off might as well throw a new 1 on, esp since they are cheap. |
