Is there a way to find out if someone served in the Marines?

I have a co worker who is wears a USMC belt buckle, Always is saying "hoorah", only wants to hire kids from the military as he says they are more disciplined yada yada yada.
I just have a funny feeling about this and heard that someone asked him about his service and he said he tried to enlist but they wouldn't take him because he is too old and has a bad knee.
This guy is the biggest DB and it would be an insult to every person in the service as well as my dad who served as a Marine and a few very close friends who toured in Iraq. I just want to see if he has every been in any branch.

We've got a wannabe type here at work too, wears BDU pants bloused in his work boots and wants me to take him to the airmans attic to get old military clothes and so on. He was in a car accident and broke his neck so could never enlist, but always talks about he wished he could have and so on.
Ask him where he served, when he went in, what squad or whatever the marines have in basic, and what specialty he was in.

if that fails pour some beer on the floor and see if he drops down and licks it up...

No chance of that- I cannot stand to look at him never mind starting a convo like I care- if I asked him and he admitted to never serving I don't think I could hold my comments-
I was hoping there was an online list or something

Yeah, MOS number or even ask him what his Serial number is/was, (SSN.) Most can't overcome those two simple Q's.

Union Battalion Special Opps.

Seriously, the guy said they wouldn't take him, not that he claimed some kind of valor. Did I miss something? Sounds like he just talks out of his ass but doesn't claim anything.

A Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines here.

0311 is infantry in the Marine Corps or at least it was in 1989 when I enlisted.

If you want to really screw with the guy ask him where he went to boot camp. If he replies Parris Island, then ask him which battalion, tell him you thought he was in 4th battalion. See when I went through Parris Island in 1989, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd battalion were for the men and 4th battalion was for WM's or women Marines.

There are always different ways to tell. Mess with him ask him about his drill sgt...see in the Marines they are drill instructors not drill sgt's like that nasty ass Army. Ask him about his MOS, some guys will respond with a number like I used to 0311. Some guys will just respond grunt. Both answers are right. If he starts hemming and hawwing, he's full of you know what. I've been out since 1995 and I can still tell you the serial number to my M-16. Some stuff you never forget.

Most Marines are very proud of their prior service. Some take it to an extreme. I still wear my hair very short, yes I do have a USMC tattoo, but NO I don't walk around my job shouting out hoorah and other dumb stuff.

Try to kill him. If you succeed, he wasn't a Marine.

I don't know how old or young your "subject" is, however, maybe this link would offer some assistance:
