Help. 98 gt turns over but wont start

I sold my 98gt to my brotherin law. About a month and a half ago it fired right up like normal. About a week later my brother inlaw called saying it wouldn't start. I went over a couple of days later and it fired right up. A couple of weeks ago he tried starting it and it won't fire up. I went over yesterday. It was late so I couldn't check too much. When it turns over there is no sign of combustion taking place or like its even trying to. I pulled most of the plugs. They seemed ok. I even took one off, grounded it to see if there was spark while trying to turn over the engine. There was spark all though it didn't seem too bright. I haven't checked if its getting fuel. I don't know why it wouldn't. It was before and it has just been sitting since. I will check fuel in the next couple of days. Never had thi problem before, but then again the car has never sat like this either. Any one experience this and have any advice on what may be the cause.

Ok so you have spark, always a bonus...Easiest way to check to see if your getting fuel into the system, smell the exhaust pipe after ya crank it...your going to smell gas if it is all working. From what you have said, it sounds like it is not trying to fire at all...correct? If so, either you have a really really big chunk of gunk in the fuel filter that is occasionaly blocking the outlet (doubt it) or your fuel pump (more probable) is on its way out.

Edit...did this car ever have any aftermarket work done on it? Is this problem happening when the car is under 1/4 tank? Just wondering if maybe they did a cheater mod to the pump basket...cutting holes in it to make it flow better.

Ok double edit...it could also be the PATS messing with you

IME PATS either works or doesn't; it's not intermittent.

Check the iac

If you hold the gas peddle down just slightly, and it starts, that would mean that the iac is stuck closed, give it a try

It appears that the fuel pump may be bad. Before it started fine. Then one day it wouldn't sart. A week later it started up fine. Now it wont start at all or even try to. We pulled the fuel line off the fuel rail and cranked the engine. nothing comes out. We repaced the fuel filter, still no luck. Im not sure how the new fuel systems on these cars work, but if I remove the fuel line from the fuel rail and crank the engine, shouldnt their be fuel squirting out? If i Spray carb cleaner in the throttle body, it fires right up then dies once the fumes are gone. I think it cant be a fuel pump fuse, because if it were blown the starting problem wouldnt have been intermitent. What does the relay do? can this be the problem? If you listen in the engine on the passenger side near the fire wall, you do hear a little buzz for a few seconds. I thougt that was the fuel pump, but apparently not. Its located in the tank. I tried pulling the filter cap and listening for a noise when the ignition was turned on, but didnt hear anything. Im starting to thinks its the pump.

tonys98gt:

I agree with your assessment that the pump is faulty.

Check the grounds (that they are secured and not corroded). Check the fuse (if high ohms then the fuse is blown).

FP relay is in the CCRM (constant current relay module) and it is in the passenger front fender well.

Try running a 12 VDC wire to the pump to give it one last test.

HTH,

Chris

A quick test I always use for diganosing a fuel pump is to hit the tank with a 2x4 or rubber mallet while someone cranks it, if it starts-it's a f/pump, you just shocked it free.

My '98 GT is doing the exact same thing. It started just fine this morning, i accidentally stalled it at a stop light. i tried to start it again, but nothing happened. i can hear my fuel pump when i key on the ignition and it cranks over no problem, it just wouldn't fire off!

So i pushed the car and jump started the car and i drove it home (no problems driving it home) but when i shut the car down, the engine would crank over, just not fire off. I haven't been able to test if the plugs are getting spark or not. I get scared about taking this car out because i never know if it's going to start for me

today i replaced my crank sensor, but it is still not firing off strong. i have a T-Rex pump and i hear it loud and clear when i key on the ignition. Do you guys think it might be my COPS? If so, what make/years will be a direct swap? If i'm going to replace those, i'll probably swap the plugs and wires while i'm at it. Any ideas?

your saying you think all the cop's are bad, doubtful, check fuel pressure, just saying you hear your t-rex pump isnt good enough

i had 1 bad cop and some bad vacuum leaks last year that was causing the problem. late last year, it was a cooling temp sensor that wouldn't let the car fire off. well, today same problem, i got spark, got fuel but not firing off. i'm thinking maybe another sensor? this car is pissing me off!
