need help with cams

i have a 2003 GT. i'm considering cams, but i want a mild street cam. my question is will i have to install aftermarket valves and springs? second, who makes a good set of cams? what kind of HP gains will i see? and last, about how much do they run?

thanks!

MaroonMustangGT:

MM&FF did a "cams comparo" a few issues back. The Comp 262's looked about the best (imho) for a daily driver that is taken to the track once in a while and you do not need to change springs. I put in 268's (NPI motor here) and they pepped the car up nicely. Comp recommends that the springs be changed with the 268's but I decided to stay with the stock springs since the lift is the same and the duration is not too wild. VT Engines makes some very impressive cams, too -- see the tech article(s) at modulardepot.com. Cams run about $600 per pair. Crane and ModMax make cams, too, for the modulars but I do not know much about them. You will need misc. gaskets, oil, filter, etc. so expect another $50 to $100 out of pocket expenses for the swap. A tune is highly recommended to make the most of the cams and this could run you $400 to $600, depending on where/who you get to tune the car.

Good luck with your selection!

Another vote for the SHM 2730s here. I am making pretty good power with these cams on a headswapped 97 (search for my Headswap numbers post) and am running stock springs.

Check out VT's Cams...I have the stage 1's in my 01 GT Daily Driver and gained 33rwhp.
