8.8 axle tube diameter???

what is the outside diameter of the axle tube (housing) on an 8.8 (mustang) rear end?? i ned to know the actual diameter, i know ts said to be 3" but is it exactly 3"? if anyone has their car accesible and could use dial calipers or something to measure, please do. that would be great.

Adam, I just measured the OD of the rear axle tube on my 90LX 5.0 and it is 2.815 inches.

wow, was that with dial calipers or what? how id you measure it? im curious now because ive been reading and the 8.8's from explorer/ mountaineers are 3.25" OD.

i know the axle tubes neck down a bit the closer you get to the axle flange. so if you could measure near the pumpkin that would be a lot of help.

I measured the od of the axle tube in two places between the center section and the LCA mounts. I have a starrett digitial caliper that reads to .0005. Whoever said they are 3.00 or 3.25 inches probably heard or read it and keeps passing it along.
