aod wont shift on 88 mustang

My dad bought an 88 mustang Gt Convertable. It has the aod in it and it will not shift out of 1st gear. The car is going to be towed to my house where I can check it out. What all can I check before pulling the tranny to see why it isn't shifting. I have never messed with an aod (I am a 5 speed kind of guy) so even the stupidest things to check will be helpful. Thank you for your help.

Checked the color of the fluid...if it's brown or dark....it's toast....check the shift cable on the throttle body to see if it came a loose...but mostly likely...if it just rev up without moving...time for another trans

I have not driven the car or seen the car yet. But from what I understand it goes great in 1sr gear with no slipping.

If it don't go into 2nd and 3rd and Overdrive, (Overdrive being the weakest gear which to go first)...then it's toast

I would check the TV cable first and foremost. Its the cable on the throttle body that's closest to the passenger fender. If its not adjusted properly it can reek havoc on the transmission shift points. Also get a new grommet for the cable to sit in on the TB, usually they are worn out or missing. Also check fluid level.

thank you for the replies. it turns out the TV cable was not connected at the throttle body. The clip that holds it was broke. Thank you for all your help.
