C-4 for the strip 70% and 30% street. Help

Hey guys. I'm looking to ditch my TKO and go with a C-4 for lighter weight and consistancy. I'd also like it so the wife can drag it and not have to worry about shifting. The car is a 93GT with a Dart based 8.5:1 347 fed by a 70mm turbo (15-18psi). I plan on running a 26-27" tire with 3.27 gears.
I want to run a brake on it for good spooled launches but don't know what stall to go with. I want it to be able to take off somewhat decent at a stop sign but still hold it's own at the track. Would a 3500-4000 stall work for me? How big of a cooler would I need for it?
What do you all run for both with more strip use?
Thanks guys
Dave

There is one problem with your plan. You can not have a transbrake and still have automatic shifts for your wife. ALL transbrakes valve bodies on the market are reverse manual patterns.
I recommend you talk to a converter company to get a recommendation on stall speed.

Hence the word 'Manual". I see now. Can you explain the "reverse" part? What is reversed? The shift pattern?
Thanks for the help. I haven't been too big on auto's. I'm getting to the power level that I need one as well as cleaner shifts and launches.

With a reverse manual first gear is next to neutral and second and third are toward you as well. Only way to figure the stall is to give all of your spec's to whoever is going to do you converter. High stall converters are not a problem on the street if you have a good cooler. Best one I know is the B&M Race cooler, about $60 from Summit. It's not real big but it does an excellent job at keeping the trans temps down. My setup is a Dynamic Mighty Mite M2 and TCT converter (5500 stall) with that B&M cooler.

Well hell John, If it works for your million horsepower beast, it should work for me. How many of you actually use a trans brake versus just holding the pedal down to just under flashing?
I think I may just ditch the TKO then and find out about a convertor from Continental.
Thanks
Dave

I use one. It's the next closest thing to reving the engine and dumping a clutch.

Exclamation A word of caution...

You'll want to beef up your C-4's internals a bit with a 347. My buddy has a 347/C-4 in his 73 Pinto Wagon and has had issues with the one planetary set eating itself. Since he upgraded to the six-pinion planetary (stockers have three) there has been no more breakage.

BTW, he foot-brakes (no trans brake), holding the rpms at around 2600 at the line with a 4000rpm converter. He made it to the semi's in the 10.90 class at the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk this past year. Best ET for his car is 10.73 @ around 124mph with 1.42-1.43 60 ft times.

My car won't footbrake past 2000RPM....but on the brake it'll go to 4000, just about the sweet spot for my motor.

I bought a 10" converter from Dynamic with my Mighty Mite. With my 347 it would go to 4500 on the brake, but it took off from a stop sign like a stocker.

I think getting a good converter is probably the difference between liking an automatic setup and not liking it.

Dynamic is a good place to deal with. Their converter guy, Lenny, recently went out on his own, he can be reached at

Good luck, I think you'll like it, especially since you don't have to run a giant gear in the back to make it work.

Steve I agree
The right converter is woth what ever you spend on it. The wrong one is not worth the box it came in.

I am using a Coan and it was right on the money out of the box. But I spent $900 on it and don't regret it one bit. Proably the best money I have spent on the car.

I like the Coan and Dynamic is also good. I bought a Coan because Charlie Booze Jr. uses them and felt that they could built me what I needed.

My tip is pick a company and go with what they say. Cheapest is not the best.

Tim

We ran a TCI and it was GARBAGE. I would stay way away from TCI, if they were the last convertor company I would either switch to a manual or quit racing. But we got smart and changed to a PTC wich is Performance Automatics company. I looked at Neal CHance and decided against them since the price was a little higher and I am not going to keep the C-4 for ever. If its the last convertor your going to buy go with the Neal Chance. Dynamic also makes a killer convertor and Lenny at Ultimate would be a good one, he use to own Dynamic so he knows his stuff. Also Edge Convertors is a good one. But all in all you get what you pay for.

Truer words were never spoken when it comes to torque converters. They make or break the success of how your automatic tranny performs for you. You'll pay out the @ss for a good converter, but getting the best converter for your combo is key.

If it doesn't lift the front wheels when you shift 2nd, what fun is it?
