How quick with M/T 255-60-15 Drag Radials?

We have 8"s weld on our 85GT and we were running 275-50-15's and were having a hard time hooking at the track. Our best 60ft was 1.8 and a 12.3 @112. Over the winter we switched to a narrower/taller 255-60-15 and we havnt been to the track yet, but on the street, they hook so much better than the 275-50's. We think the 8" rim was too narrow and pulling the sides of the 275 tires up, maybe. Anyways, are any of you guys running the 255-60-15 M/T Drag Radials and how quick could our car be and still have enough tire to hold it with a good suspension. If you run the 255-60-15's with a stick, let me know how quick you are going and what your 60fts are. Thanks!

I have a 2003 mach 1 spraying a 100 shot out of the hole. I have the 255/60/16 MT drs. I have been getting 1.72-1.78 60 ft and running high 11's. Starting with 16.5 lbs cold.

I have run 1.56 60fts with the 235-60-15 MT and I just stepped up to the 27 inch tall 255-60-15 and don't have any times yet. I am very interested to see people's results.

I haven't run the 255 but on the 275 the best I have so far is 1.62. I had my rear shocks set a bit too stiff so I'll try to fix that when I go back and hope for some 1.5x's! One thing I hate is how much you have to slip the clutch to get these bad boys to hook but I guess that's how the DR's are.

i hate these tires, best was 1.77 60 ft 11.8 @ 118

terribly inconsistent, im going back to a normal et street.

they do hook awesome on the street though, but i only got 2500 miles and 3 trips to the track. thats not good enough for me. im over the m/t drag radial hype.

Congrats on your 306 combo. You are making some really good HP/TQ numbers. I've seen strokers not much more than that. Is the 12.0 @113 in the 94-95 in your avatar? If so that is awesome too, because those SN95's are heavy beasts!

I've been 1.52 60fts on 255/60/15 M/T drag radials. My buddy had been mid 1.40's 60fts. on a tranny brake leaving at 4800 rpm. They fit better than the 275/50/15 IMO.

We thought the same thing. The 255-60 fits the Fox wheel well perfect and we don't have to worry about the fender lip cutting the tire and we could put our quad shocks back on the right way. With the 275's we had to put the quads on backwards to clear the tire. You guys are getting great 60 fts with the 255-60, so we should be in good shape with some good suspension stuff. Thanks for the help!

This is awesome! You guys have us excited about getting this beast back to the track and see what we can do with the new tires on it. Too bad we live in Ohio where it is snowy, 30 mph winds and wind chills of zero. Back in the day, someone told me that the guys who use the wider 275's with the best results are using 10" rims. Our 8" welds must have been pulling the outside of the 275's up off the track. I noticed the tires were smooth on the outer 1" or so on each side , just like they never touched the pavement.

Perfect timing to find this thread, I was about to order tires. For years I ran the 275/50/15 M/T and results varied on different tracks. Best of 1.41 60' with them though.

Went to the 275/60/15 for the extra height to help with the RPMs at the end of the 1/4 (3.55 rear trapping 145 mph). Made 5 passes on them and no 60' was worse then 1.41, with a best of 1.402. Felt like I could of even tried to launch higher on the t-brake. The 275/60s just caused to much headache with clearance on my GT. Ended up eating them up on a dyno pull.

So I saw the 255/60s and was considering trying them out. I am running a 15x10 wheel though. I like the idea of the 27" tall, just not sure about them being narrower then the 275s.

As you know a stick car and a drag radial is tough to make work. I went 1.61 - 11.21 @ 123 in my 85 though....on that 255/60

For those of you using the 255-60 with a stick, what rear gear do you use? We were running a 4.10 with our 26" 275-50's, but when we put the 27" 255-60's on we bought a set of 4.30's, but never put them in yet. The rpm calculator says that the 255-60/4.30 combo would trap almost identical to the 275-50/4.10's did. Does swapping to the 4.30's sound like a good idea?? Our 302 was trapping at 112, about 6100, but we are going to a 331 and wondered if the 331 would like the 4.30's or since it will have more torq would like the 4.10's better. Plenty of gear helped us since we have the high 2.95 first gear in our "Z". Let me know what you think.

A little different tire but yesterday at the Vegas PSCA. Ron Shaw in Street Challenge on a true 255x60x15 M/T ST went a 8.96 159.40 ...5.85 in the eighth thats kickin butt on a small true radial tire.

I am trying to figure out what tires to get myself. I have a 5spd car with 450+ rwhp. I just want something for the track but my car is lowered and I can't fit a 28" tall tire. I think I may run out of gear with a 26", so I may go down to 3.55 gears idk.

I'm running the P295/55R15 with 3:55 gears. 1.55/1.63's leaving on the foot brake @ 2000 rpm. Best time so far leting off on the big end 10.54 @ 125. 16psi in the tires, easy burn out.
