Question Why do C&L mass air meters not like CAI???

I have an 88GT and I am going to convert it to mass air in a few weeks and I bought a conversion kit with a 73mm C&L mass air meter. I have heard that some C&L meters don't like CAI and I don't want to run the stock unit or one that stays in the engine compartment, i would like to run a fenderwell unit either a desencharger or a power pipe from Anderson ford motorsport.
Is it possible to run these type units with C&L meters?

The codes on my C&L are:

F1ZF-12B579-AA
AFH55-03B

Then in a little boxed area is: 0C23

Do these codes mean anything?

Thanks for the info

the issue is due to the sample tube design on the C&L meters. when incomming air makes a 90 deg. bend right before the meter (like a CAI) the meter won read all the air that moves through the meter because a lot of the air is hugging the wall.

you can correct this problem by actually turning the meter until you get a more stable idle.

mine works great. although i dont have a CAI. just the stock box with K&N.

take care,
adam

ALLL METERES, C&L, Stock, Pro-M etc.... are affected one way or another by CAI.

I was at a dyno session where the guy LOST 30rwhp with the additon of a CAI to a stock meter. He they tried a Pro-M, and only 8 hp came back He then took off the CAI and got all hsi power back. The compnay that made it has since supplied re-calibrated MAF sensors for their CAI kits.

Mass air sensors are calibrated to work with a certain quality of airflow. If you change this, you change the type of flow, and the meters readings WILL get out of whack.

Good luck,
Toma

Will a C&L 76mm MAF meter fit with the BBK or Mac cold-air kit without cutting the tubes or buying new connector hoses?
Lou.

My 76mm C&L works perfectly with my Moroso CAI, no problems at all.

My MAC CAI and 73mm C&L (19# calibration) have no problems...I have only slightly clocked the MAF towards the motor (if that makes sense), and have no idle problems. Of course, I also have a stock cam, and make 17" of vacuum at idle....

However, I will be doing track testing to see if the "CAI" is worth a damn thing at the track, because I don't believe it will be! It's just shiny, and was on the car when I bought it - I would never have actually spent the cash on it.

Lou.
You maybe able to strech out the connectors enough, but I doubt it.

They are talking about Cold Air Induction kits like these:

Your probably getting fan wash. You should get a shield or mount that filter in the fender.

Even though I have a "mod motor" I do have the MAC CAI and the C&L MAF. The unit was previously installed on my friend's 99. He said he noticed a difference, and backed it up by .2sec on the 1/8th (only track near P.cola). The unit now resides in my car, and to tell you the truth, I'm not too happy with it. I'll be at Carlsbad this weekend, to test the combo out, but I doubt it did anything other than hurt the performance. I'll try turning the meter like abvcon12 said. I hope that works. I really don't want this thing in here, but my stock unit is in Fla, so I have no choice until I go back there next month.

Oh, BTW, for those wondering, the MAC inlet tube, the flange that holds the stock MAF has to be cut off. You can then use 4" sewer pipe (cheap and at home depot) rubber to mount the two. Once again, I'll try turning the unit and get back to you all later.
