Thanks for all the added input. I'll get them added here in a few. In my defense...I have run 3 AFM cams and loved every one of them, but I got them all used and every time I tried to talk to Rick, I didn't get the answers I needed

The funny thing is, he'd probably sell more cams if he made the specs available. I didn't order my N-111 till I found out the specs. Here they are by the way.
248/258 @.050 .576 lift

That's the funny thing...he WOULD sell more by listing the specs...
and listing the recommended combination of parts to be uesed, IE: RPMI / II intake or similar, this size TB...this size headers...blah, blah, blah...not just the rpm range and motor size/compression... AND SECOND...HE NEEDS TO SUPPORT THE SECONDARY MARKET FOR HIS USED CAMS...that means making specs available to those that bought the cam used and need them to install it... Doesn't every one of the cams have a serial # to prove that they actually have the cam in their hands...just a thought... either way...GOOD POST...we NEEDED the info. The custom cam route is a bit different, IMO...as they are spec'd for a VERY SPECIFIC combination of parts...and would only be useful for a duplicate application...but they would probably still perform as good as picking one of Anderson's based on just the specs... 2 thumbs up... |

I am glad he posted this info. The reason is because I went to Anderson's site to look at some blower cams, however there were no specs. I needed to make sure a cam would work well with my 94 without alot of tuning. No specs therefore I was ready to choose someone elses cam like a Steeda. However this post may help anderson sell me a cam.

I'd bet if he put out a new ad that listed all him cams with the specs - he'd drastically improve sales. When I set out looking for a cam, I know about where I want the duration and lift to fall which I'm sure is the case with many of you. A model number with an rpm range doesn't tell you squat so I'm sure many Anderson prospects just move on and order a cam that they know the specs before they order it.

I was looking for a cam last year. I called AFM up to buy one because I know he puts out quaility parts that work well. They would not give me ANY specs on the cams. I knew how much lift/duration I could run but could not get any info. I was not about to buy any cam by anyone saying buy model #... I did some research and got the specs for the cam I wanted to find out about from a fellow Mustanger here on the Corral. After I found out the specs I called Rick up to order mine.
I'm glad I did find out because I love the cam. This post might help others in deciding on a cam. |

Sorry, but I don't understand something. Rick is pretty much the technical voice of Anderson Motorsports. If a person believes enough in their cams to want to purchase one, at an above average price, why would he then not trust the person most knowledgeable about the product to chose the correct cam and the correct way to install it.
I'm not trying to say that there is no one here that is more knowledgeable about cams than Rick and the others at Anderson, but if you are such a person, why not design your own cam? If not, why not just take Rick's advice? Tim |

Because he has no way to know how it needs to get installed. When degreeing a cam, you ignore the notch numbers on the crank gear, and put it wherever it need to be to match the cam card. Any number of things can be off, throwing it all out of whack. For example, I had a cheap ebay timing set, to match my FTI cam card it needed to be on the 4A groove. Nothing else changed besides a better timing set bought from Ed, and the new one needs a different groove to match the card. Rick would have no way of knowing where to install it, and I dont believe he would just say to put it straight up for best performance.

Updates to original post.....
Quote:
So what happens when you buy a motor with a cam it in and want to use it, but with no specs.....or you buy a set of heads that the guy had a AFM cam b/c rick recommended it and he didn't have the cam card? At least the specs will give you the basics to A) see if you want to use it and B) see if it is the same cam that has the "dremel" marks on it. You've obviously made it known that you didn't like me posting the specs...Ok you made your point....Stroll on through... I'm sure it will be more of a benifit to people, and ricks sales than a hinderance. If you had as many people as me ask me the specs on this cam and that cam, it gets old. I get a couple PM's a week about my junkyard combo listed in the sig. I searched and search for specs on a couple of the cams I've had. Took me forever. and as I found new ones over the YEARS, I kept track of them. So what? I thought I'd post them up to save people some of the aggrevation I went through. And something to put in the database for the search function that no one seems to know how to use. And to say I got into someone's info and leaked it...don't you think I'd post the valve events if, I had? BTW, I have pics of some of the cam cards w/ the valve evnts, so anyone that needs them Pm me, or I might add them to the post. You must work for Rick, based on your location or are possibly Rick himself....but with that Install the cam straight up, I highly doubt you are him. And I never once said anything bad about AFM cams....They are good cams. I got my first one three years ago with a shortblock I bought, again used. I threw together a budjet build and was happy with the results. yada yada.

I show the N-51P as the following
Duration at .050" - 228(in)/238(ex) Lobe lift - .312"(in)/.311"(ex) Center line - 110+4 I lost my card but this is a pure street cam and I belive the lift with 1.6 roockers was .500in and .498ex but not 100% sure on that, but it's not more than .500 on both sides. I don't know what the big prob is, you call em, Rick that is and tellem what you want to do and what combo you have and he'll suggest a cam. Then it's up to you to get a very tested cam or take your chances with an after market off the shelf untested
$175 cam and hope for the best. I'm no cam expert, but I see in the mags about the testing they do at afm and think they are, there for will trust them. |

Hmmmmm I recognize those last two cam cards. They look just like the ones that come with a new Crane Cam. Are the AFM cams just a special grind from Crane?

IDK, but all my old comp cams, crane, blue racer (wolverine) cam cards used to look like this. I think it was kinda like an industry standard or something. All the newer AFM cams have the colored looking cards with the individual boxes for the specs.

These are just the basics lift and duration specs. the secrets are in the valve events, which most of them are not posted anyways. This was to give you guys some "basics" when deciding on cams w/o going the custom route.
