347 Street Fighter stroker reliable?
My brother is trying to decide on an engine option for his '91 notchback. His 5.0 has 170k miles and is starting to show signs of wear.
We're considering the Probe (CHP) 347 Street Fighter stroker kit. At $995, it seems to be an incredible value and they claim 100k miles of reliability with their "offset pin" design that allows for a longer rod, and keeps the pin out of the oil groove.
With this longer rod and tight oil ring, I'd think that these engines could possibly see 100k miles of reliability, with less side loading and a tighter ring seal.
But what have you guys experienced? This car is not a commuter car, but it does see mostly street duty on the weekends and the occasional trip to work.
If this option turns out to be unreliable, we're considering a Summit forged rebuild kit for $419.95 and just get this motor ready for the new heads, cam, intake and some nitrous. Nothing insane, but 400-450hp is definitely the goal.
I've attached a poll, with my three options. The total cost of each option includes everything I need (rockers, lifters, pushrods, timing chain, etc) and a set of TFS heads and cam.
I've got a tight budget, and the 351 option is actually way over, but I'm throwing it in anyway, just to see how many would recommend it.
